Sometimes, from this side of the pond, it's hard to understand that these soldiers were part of the tragedy, too. Could they have resisted what their government ordered them to do? Either way, their lives were lost.
They were people, too, so of course that's true. It's hard to imagine, yet what would I do in the situation? I might be willing to give up my life, but if the lives of my loved ones were threatened I'd do pretty much anything to spare them.

In most cases, no, they were doing this because they were forced to.
