Tuberculosis Sanatorium

This is an example of one of the many buildings in Leysin that were sanatoriums for patients with tuberculosis. My great grandmother, Ruzena Zatkova, lived the last days of her short life here. She died in Leysin at the age of 38.

As pretty as it is, it has an institutionally ominous feel to it.

The big balconies you see on the side are so they can wheel the beds out. The thinking of the day was that the sun could help cure you.
