Our next stop was the bigger Fort de Douaumont. This fort was easily captured on the 25th of February 1916 by the Germans at the beginning of the battle of Verdun because it was improperly staffed. It set the stage for the rest of a battle which lasted nine months. Douaumont was finally recaptured on 24 October 1916. This event brought closure to the Battle of Verdun in 1916.
