Avenches/Aventicum

We decided to go to Avenches, Switzerland one day after driving by it many times on the way to Basel. Little did we know what treasures were to be discovered there! It turns out that Avenches was once called Aventicum and was the Roman capital of the province! This amphitheatre could hold up to 16,000 people.

And it is still used! Fantastic historic architecture.

Totally cool. I think it's so great that it's still in use after ALL THESE YEARS.
I Heart IT.

PS - You must meet up with "Based in Villigen" sometime...I came across a summer view of the same spot on his recent post - http://basedinvilligen.blogspot.com/2010/02/avenches-amphitheater.html

Nice photos! We have to go back in the spring/summer.

@Tash: I've met the author of Villigen. "He" is actually a "she"! We met up in Zurich a few months ago. I'm going to have to see if I can convince "Z" (her first initial) to come down to Geneva for a weekend.

Rob: Amazing isn't it?

Tash: As Janet said, she already met her. Maybe if I make it back to Zurich, I will too!
