The Last Resort Fire Department

We stumbled across The Last Resort Fire Department museum today at lunch. This place was full of old fire engines. Some were horse drawn! I'd like to go back sometime with the SLR.

That is a wooden ladder!

The one without horses.

Wooden wheel. I may use this for the Two Things Challenge: Textures/Shapes.

A wooden ladder! Wonder who's idea that was!

Beautiful old trucks though and nice to see the old photo too.

I know! I don't think they would hold up too well in a fire...

these are masterful - love the vintage trucks esp the wood & the details - look at those spokes. I take a photo of any firetruck I pass - I don't know what to do with them all. But they are so shiny & bright.

Wooden ladders are often used because they resist heat, they're inexpensive to replace (compared to aluminum or fiberglass), they don't conduct electricity like aluminum and fiberglass, and they're easy to maintain. Very few fire jurisdictions in the U.S. use them anymore, though. One of the notable exceptions is the San Francisco Fire Department. Here's an article about the SFFD's wooden ladders.

Okay, I'll climb down off my ladder now. (Ha.) Nice pictures, Maya, esp. that last one of the wheel. Not only is it beautiful, it's perfect for this week's challenge!

tash: I was worried I've been posting too many fire trucks lately, but like you said, they draw you in, don't they?

dc: Full of knowledge as usual. ;-)

prof: It was! I'm not sure I will be able to go back before my company moves out of Pioneer Square which is a shame. I'd like to go back with my "good" camera!
