Um... Cliff Notes? Wikipedia?? The Internets??? Or, you could do what I shamefully admit I've done: fake it. Actually, I've heard "The Time Traveler's Wife" is a good book.
I'm reading a book about a Yankee spy who lived in Richmond, Va., during the Civil War. Said spy was a woman!
Janet took the words right out of my mouth. How about Amazon reviews? comments? I've got this book calling out to me along with many others. I do want to read this one too.
Or, brew two pots of coffee, sit in a comfortable chair and forage ahead. Or, do what I do; make stuff up and wing it. ;-) If you can't dazzle them with knowledge, dazzle them with humorful nonesense.

d.c.: That book sounds good. A woman spy during the Civil War? Cool!
artful: The book was pretty good, though I felt it lagged a bit in the middle.
dusty: I pretty much did this. I just did nothing but read until the last minute. I did finish it in time (barely)!
